Inverse Logic

Just got windows 7 on a PC and it will not let me change anything in the program files folder from "read only", which means it will not allow downloading or modifying any files (i.e. EQ, among other things).

This is in spite of being logged in as admin, trying to run explorer in "run as admin" mode, trying to change permissions (it won't let me) etc.

It tried researching it on the web and saw some references to others having the same issue, but no responses at all on how to fix it or what might be causing it.

Any ideas?

If you simply need to change the directory Read-Only Flag:

Right-Click, Properties, [General] tab, uncheck the Read-only box.

If you are getting an access denied message when initially trying to navigate there then it would be a permissions issue:

Right-Click, Properties, [Security] tab.
If there is an entry Type=Deny, Name=Everyone, etc. line along with your SYSTEM, Administrators, & your account name on that comp then that could be the issue.
Hit the [Change Permissions] button, highlight the line with Deny Everyone and [Remove] that entry.

If the permissions for the specific account you are using aren't allowing it then modify them accordingly for your account:
Right-click, Properties, [Security] tab.

All programs under program files will remain read only. The "Shortcut" to eq that you place on your desktop will be able to be run in admin mode, will run all of eq in admin. I never put my EQ folder under a system file. I currently house my EQ folder on a separate Drive and before I did that, I put it in my Download folder.

I just installed EQ to C:\Users to keep me from having those issues.

Khatt: The problem is it won't let me do that. When I try to set to not read only, it tells me I don't have admin rights on some of the content, but I'm on an admin account running explorer in admin mode. Not only that, but it won't let me change permissions on most things, or if it does, it just reverses what I did as soon as I hit the "OK" button.

Even on Vista you could go in and do anything you wanted as admin or in admin mode, are you guys telling me that Win7 is such a POS that like a MAC, which I also own and despise, you are locked out of controlling your own system and can only do things in small areas where it "lets you"? If that is the case, I may buy a Vista 64 license and scrap win7. If I had known what a junk OS this was, I wouldn't have got it in the first place.

Also, since when are program files "system files"? System file used to mean things in the windows folder. Program files, until Win7 I guess, were always things you could install, modify, delete at your pleasure. You could do the same to system files for that matter, but it was clear what was what.

If EQ is in Program Files or Program Files (X86) then just right click the shortcut for eqgame.exe and click "Run As Administrator"

That may run the program, but if everything is "read only" it will interfere with patches, logs, .ini files, anything that regularly gets written to won't it?

It will not interfere with anything the server does to those things but it will cause issues if you go in and try and manually change stuff in .ini files or logs etc (you have to copy and paste these to another area and modify them then delete the old in the eq program and then copy paste your modified version back in). Really best thing to do is install eq to user section of windows then you have free rein with it.

eq auto installes into users on windows 7, I know cause i just recently did it. I think it goes to public users.

It will patch just fine. Run it as Administrator. It's pretty common for Windows 7 and EQ. I do it every single time I start EQ on either computer.
