The January patch brought with it some issues with gamma (directX blah blah blah). Anyway, chances are if you have a NVIDIA graphics card, when you log in to EQ your screen will likely be very dark. Heck, you'll notice this even on the character select screen. The walkthrough below should help get you up and running for EQ - note, however, this will tend to "wash out" graphics of basically every other game/program you run until you adjust your settings again.
1) On your computer, go to "Display Settings"
2) Click on "Advanced Display Settings"
3) Click on "Display adapter properties for Display XX"
4) Click on "Color Management" tab on the screen that pops up.
5) Click on the "Color Management" button.
6) Click on "Advanced" tab at the top of that screen that pops up
7) Click on "Calibrate Display"
8) Click "Next" 3 times
9) Crank the gamma slider WAY up (nearly max)
10) Click next
11) Click cancel
Alternatively, some folks have had success by using in-game features. Two things to try here:
1) In EQ go to Options -> Display and crank the "Enhance Vision" slider all the way to 100%
2) in EQ go to Options -> Display -> Advanced and activate "Use Advanced Lighting"
These did not work for me but they do work for others. Good luck.
